I am going to take a tangent today because my favorite blogger, Seth Godin, had a very interesting post last week titled "Give the people what they want" and the next line was "...isn't nearly as powerful as teaching people what they need." His posts are always thought provoking and this one explains how we like to do business which, quoting Seth again, is to "take your time and invest in a process that helps people see what they truly need".

Many times per day, prospects will ask for a specific water technology like RO, DI, Fleck valves, AquaMatic, etc. The easy thing to do would be to flip a budget price back for the system or product that may or may not perform for you. What we do is to take a step back and ask a few key questions to insure the product you buy from us will match your water quality and quantity requirements. It takes a little time, and it is the correct way to operate.

This list of questions has been posted previously, but it does not hurt to remind everyone:

What are the average, minimum, and peak flow rates you need from the water treatment system?

Is the flow continuous or how many shifts do you operate during the day?

Do you have or plan to have a tank after the water treatment system?

What is the source of your water and do you have an untreated water analysis?

What is the water used for and do you have a treated water specification?

What are the required temperature and pressure of the treated water?

What level of automation do you need, i.e. manual, semi-automatic or fully automatic?

Are there any special requirements for the system?

When do you need the quotation by?

When do you need the system to be installed?

With these questions answered, we can offer a properly sized, cost effective solution to your water treatment problem with minimal maintenance.
We are helping an increasing numbers of facilities that have recognized the inherent risk of microbiological contamination of the water used to make their product.

This occurs because water provides an effective medium for growth and transmission of bacteria, mold spores and viruses particularly where water stagnates in your plant.

Note: It’s not just pharmaceutical plants that are contacting us these days to help implement a microbiological control program!

If your facility uses water for/in blending, consumer products, personal care products, microelectronics manufacture, beverage production, packaging, etc., you should be increasing your awareness and building capability to monitor and control microbiological species of all types.

What can we do?

We can help you develop a microbiological control program that protects your plant and products! There are many methods of minimizing your risk in this area but all include a few different components:

Prefiltration before your DI Process tanks

A recirculation loop to keep the water moving and fresh

A UV system which has very high effectiveness in removing protozoa, bacteria and viruses, and many options to fit your needs and budget

A post filter to remove many of the matter left after UV destruction

A PM (Preventative Maintenance) protocol that includes regular monitoring of multiple forms of bacteria, molds, and water borne contaminants.

A PM schedule for maintenance and sanitization of your system including all piping and drop legs

On a recent sales call to a local dialysis clinic, the biomedical technician
complained about a distinct loss of capacity in his water softener. Asking the
typical diagnostic questions, such as resin age, brine system inspection, the
Bio Med told me they recently upgraded their Reverse Osmosis machine and they
are using considerably more water. End of story correct; more water used, more regenerations required? Well No. We ran the
numbers and still concluded he was regenerating the softener too often. Something
else was wrong.

Tank X-RAY

I had one last trick up my sleeve. “The Tank X-Ray”. Yes, folks, you can
X-Ray a softener tank with a 500 watt halogen work light as sold in many home
improvement stores. The X-Ray process is easy; you darken the room, turn on the
light, and press it against the upper 1/2 of the tank. Now, this only works
with a natural color fiberglass mineral tank. The bright light will not
penetrate a painted tank. The light will let you gaze at the insides of the
tank. Everything will appear as shadows.

What we discovered here was the resin beads were all bunched up to one side
of the tank. NOT GOOD. The resin should appear as an even, level, dark line
across the whole diameter of the tank. AH HA! This tank was suffering from a
little known chronic problem called “Diffusion Exclusion”. Someone forgot to
include the Inlet Diffuser/Disperser. The inlet diffuser is an option offered with the
new control valve that regulates the resin regeneration process. This small
critical part is often discarded as unidentifiable.

The inlet diffuser is attached to the underside of the control valve during
tank assembly. Its main purpose it to diffuse the path of the water flowing
into the resin bed during the DOWN FLOW service cycle. The diffuser forces the
water evenly outside, then down. Without the diffuser, the water path is
straight down. The result is a drilling effect. The drilling gets worse as the
flow increases.

Two bad things happen:

The resin is usually blasted and gets bunched up.

You lose efficiency at high flow because the water isn't flowing evenly through the resin bed, it's drilling past it.

In Conclusion:

Avoid Tank Turmoil. X-Ray your
tank. It’s actually fun to do. Even more fun is to start your softener into a
regeneration cycle and watch your resin expand upward during backwash and float
around like lava, then see it settle down during the rinse cycles.

It is interesting how the same mechanism which causes fouling of implantable medical devices, fouls our UPW distribution systems, industrial pipes and boat propellers.

This model confirms what we see in the field that once a biofilm takes hold, the problem seems to accelerate in severity. This is why Res-Kem recommends routine sanitizations of water treatment distribution systems to remove biofilms.
As little as 0.05ppm of Manganese will cause staining of plumbing fixtures. Only 0.5 ppm of iron will cause staining. And Sulfur? P.U.! Need I say more?

To battle the Trio, professionals have traditionally used Ion Exchange water softeners and Oxidation/Reduction media. Ion Exchange only works on dissolved iron and manganese and is prone to fouling and won't treat sulfur. So my experience is to apply oxidation media that has been treated with a coating of Manganese Dioxide. These media are popular in the industry and are sold under the trade names of Birm, MTM, Pyrolox, Filox, and Greensand Plus. All these media have different percentages of manganese dioxide coatings. The amount of coating determines their capacity. The key to success lies with this capacity.

Manganese Dioxide acts as a catalyst that utilize oxidizers fed into the water stream ahead of the media bed to perpetuate the oxidation and reduction process. Pre-feeding oxidizers is commonly called "regeneration". Please note, in all my years of experience, your success with these media depends heavily on choosing the correct oxidizer. It is a VERY rare application where you don't need to pre-feed an oxidizer. The most popular oxidizers are potassium permanganate (very messy because it stains everything purple) , Sodium hypochlorite (bleach), Air, or 7% Hydrogen Peroxide. The most popular is bleach. Be careful to follow the manufacturers guidelines for feeding oxidants. To much will strip off the manganese dioxide coating.

Now The Exciting News:
Prince Minerals has developed a new Media called Pyrolox Advantage (PA). PA is manufactured with a proprietary process that gives it a high capacity, yet maintains a lighter-than-most density so backwash rates are greatly reduced over traditional Manganese Dioxide products. Thus the "Advantage" part. Additionally, its lighter density will make it a direct replacement for another popular media called Greensand Plus. An even bigger advantage, is that Pyrolox Advantage has nearly 3X the oxidation capacity. Its increased capacity will lengthen run time between back washing saving significant amounts of water. To conclude, if you are currently filtering with greensand plus or are battling any of the Troublesome Trio, please try Pyrolox Advantage. It's priced right to win the fight! michael urbanshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07961617321425031256noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-22688605.post-81225111667282527732014-05-08T16:45:00.001-04:002014-05-08T16:45:56.439-04:00Condensate Polisher Shipped to MichiganA condensate polisher for a district heating plant in Michigan was shipped last week.
To determine this, we need to know the flow rate and the inlet water quality. The flow is generally known, but the water quality generally is not early in a water treatment project. The easiest way is to use conductivity as a rough approximation of water quality for budget purposes only. Before a system is purchased, a complete water analysis is required to verify with one of the ion exchange resin sizing programs to purchase the correctly sized demineralizer.
filter cartridges. Most of the time, these requests will consist of: "Hey,
I need a 5 micron 20" long cartridge." Sounds simple enough; however,
there's more to a filter cartridge than the just those two particular pieces of
information. Below is an overview of what is needed to select an ideal
cartridge for your application.

Filter Cartridge End Configurations

What is the application?
Knowing the application can provide an idea if an absolute or nominal
cartridge is required. An Absolute Cartridge by definition retains 99.9% of the
particles within that micron rating. These types of cartridges are typically
used for critical applications such as process water in the Pharmaceutical
Industry. In most cases, we deal with nominal rated cartridges in which the
cartridge retains a majority of the particles of the micron rating that pass
through it. For the sake of the above request, let’s say the customer tells us
he needs a cartridge filter as pretreatment before a carbon filter. From our
experience with this application, we now know that a nominal rated cartridge
will work fine, we just need to a little more information,

Do you have a part number of your existing cartridge?
Obviously, if a customer can provide a brand and a part number, this makes
the process a smooth transition. There are a lot of different cartridge
manufacturers, such as, Pall, Shelco, Watts, Millipore, etc. Usually, they
offer very similar products that can be used within an application. If it is
okay with a customer to offer a substitute, we will try to find a cartridge we
carry that will work for them. In this
case, they do not have a part number, so we need to get a little more
information.

Cartridge Dimensions:
Since we already know the length of the cartridge, 20 inches, the next bit
of information we need to determine is the diameter of the cartridge. From our
research, the most common diameter we have come across is a 2-3/4"
cartridge. Other diameters we have seen are 2-1/2" and
sometimes 2" diameter cartridges. Another popular diameter is the
4-1/2" size, most commonly referred to as, "The Big Blue Cartridge", because
of the large blue colored housing these cartridges fit into. If the customer is not sure, we ask that
they obtain diameter measurement from a micrometer or caliper or even put a ruler
across the cartridge to get an idea. A measurement of the housing will also help
us select the right diameter cartridge. For this application, 2-3/4" diameter is what is needed.

Materials of Construction:
Next, we inquire about the material of the cartridge and the type.
Cartridges can be made of different materials, such as, Polypropylene,
Polyethersulfone PES, Cotton, Rayon, etc. These materials can made into
different types of cartridges like melt blown, string-wound, and pleated. Because
we focus primarily on potable water treatment, we most commonly sell FDA grade
Polypropylene, or Cotton. Cartridge manufactuters also provide information on
common applications their cartridges can be used. For our case of a pretreatment
cartridge before a carbon filter, a melt blown or string wound cartridge will work
fine in this application with FDA Polypropylene or Cotton.

End Configuration/Gasket Material:
Cartridges can have different types of ends, from a double open ended, single
open end - 226 O-ring with Flat end, single open end 222 O-ring; Fin(Spear), etc. And, different types of gasket material from Buna N, Silicone, Teflon, etc.

If a customer is not sure, we can either send this document along to them, or they can easily send us a photo of what they have which will allow us to determine the end configuration. The gasket material becomes important when you are dealing with something other than potable water. Typically, there will not be a gasket, or it will be Buna N or Silicone. In the case of this application, we determined this cartridge is a double open ended cartridge with no gasket.

To summarize, we need to quote the customer a 5 micron, 2-3/4" round x 20" long, melt blown, polypropylene, double open ended, nominal cartridge to pretreat water before a carbon filter. For us, it now becomes a question of pricing, availability, and packaging from our different suppliers. We can then present the customer with some options for them to determine.

If you have MSDS's at your facility, you will start seeing changes, with the above pictograms, from now on and should receive new SDS (Safety Data Sheets) before June 1, 2105.

General Overview:
According to the Hazard Communication Standard Final Rule Fact Sheet:
"New changes to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) Hazard Communication Standard are bringing the United States into alignment with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS), further improving safety and health protections for America's workers. Building on the success of OSHA's current Hazard Communication Standard, the GHS is expected to prevent injuries and illnesses, save lives and improve trade conditions for chemical manufacturers. The Hazard Communication Standard in 1983 gave the workers the ‘right to know,' but the new Globally Harmonized System gives workers the ‘right to understand.'"

Major Changes:

Hazard classification: Chemical manufacturers and importers are required to determine the hazards of the chemicals they produce or import. Hazard classification under the new, updated standard provides specific criteria to address health and physical hazards as well as classification of chemical mixtures.

Labels: Chemical manufacturers and importers must provide a label that includes a signal word, pictogram, hazard statement, and precautionary statement for each hazard class and category.

Safety Data Sheets: The new format requires 16 specific sections, ensuring consistency in presentation of important protection information.

What are the Benefits?

Enhance worker comprehension of hazards, especially for low and limited-literacy workers, reduce confusion in the workplace, facilitate safety training, and result in safer handling and use of chemicals;

Provide workers quicker and more efficient access to information on the safety data sheets;

Result in cost savings to American businesses of more than $475 million in productivity improvements, fewer safety data sheet and label updates and simpler new hazard communication training; and

Reduce trade barriers by harmonizing with systems around the world.

The end connections have Van Stone Flanges for maximum installation flexibility. All stainless steel units are fabricated to the customer's exact dimensions and flow requirements. Each unit is hydro-tested to 160 psig.

Why You Need a Resin Trap
Many water treatment processes use small granular, plastic, powdered, pelletized and/or crystalline media in a pressure vessel. Over the years, complex screens, slotted pipes, perforated plates, molded devices, etc. have been engineered to keep the media in the vessel. Through corrosion, chemical attack, thermal damage, rapid flow changes, system age and/or water hammer, these distribution systems will be damaged.

Example of a PVC Hub and Lateral Distribution System Installed in New Steel Tank

When the distribution systems are damaged, the ion exchange resin or other media will get into the water distribution system contaminating and/or destroying downstream RO membranes, expensive membrane filters, pumps, tanks, piping, processes and any product touched by this contaminated water.

Where Should You Install a Resin Trap? A resin trap should be
installed in the product water line of most resin and media based water
treatment equipment like: Softeners, Dealkalizers, Condensate
Polishers, Demineralizers, Carbon Filters, Sand Filters,
Portable DI Tanks, Greensand Filters,and/or Multi-Media Filters.

Also, a
resin trap should be considered in the backwash lines of most ion
exchange and carbon systems because temperature related flow changes can
cause these expensive materials to be sent down the drain.

What is a Resin Trap?
A resin trap is a simple, protective sieving device to insure ion exchange resin or other filtration media does not leave the water treatment equipment, and travel downstream where it doesn’t belong. It offers a stainless steel wedge-wire screen with slots small enough to retain upstream ion exchange resins or other filtration media. The number and size of the openings are designed to keep the pressure drop to a ∆P=2 psi at the rated flow rate. A clear acrylic sleeve or borosilicate glass will visually indicate whether there is an upstream problem. A small ball valve allows for recycling of resin or media after the problem has been repaired.

Since the slots in the wedge wire are 0.010 inches, 254 micron, a resin trap protects, but does not replace, downstream cartridge filters, bag filters and membrane filters which generally have a much lower micron ratings.
